FAQ

In thinking about your participation in the Microsystems Academy, several of the most common questions that arise are addressed below:

What is the benefit of this program to me?
How much does it cost?
What are the qualifications for admission?
How do I apply?
When does the next class begin?
Where are the classes held?
Who are the instructors anyway?

As always, please contact the Academy with any further questions or concerns you may have. Attend the Spring 2005 Information Night at 5:30pm on Wednesday, January 19th for additional "in-person" information.

What is the benefit of this program to me?

The emergent MEMS, or Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems, fabrication process is generating considerable R&D energy, excitement, and commercial potential across the country. In short, MEMS-fabrication characterizes the 'new face' of high-technology manufacturing and manufacturing jobs in the US today.

There are several benefits of this after-school program:

  • Location: The Academy is located in Midtown Cleveland and is within easy walking distance or RTA lines of Cleveland city students.
  • Demand: Microsystems technology is the future of manufacturing and the kind of technician level skills being developed are beginning to be in demand.
  • Entrepreneurship: Students at the Midtown center will have the opportunity to interact with MEMS start-up companies which can potentially lead to internships with those companies. Alternatively the students may want to become entrepreneurs themselves.
A program overview is here.

What are the qualifications for admission?

An "ideal" applicant would have the qualifications posted here. It is also important that potential students have a "career sponsor." A career sponsor is not a financial sponsor (we said earlier this course was free of charge), but is, for instance, a teacher, parent, church, or organization that will stand up and be supportive of your participation in the program. Many times sponsors will come to a class or two!

IMPORTANT: The "ideal profile" profile is just a starting point for "setting the bar" potential participants; several students who did not fit this profile did well in the course due to an abundance of initiative and hard work. When in doubt, step up and apply!
